When you’re starting an academic program in the United States, you’re going to have a lot of questions.
Different regulations apply for on-campus and off-campus employment. For more information see our Employment for International Students section.
You are not eligible to apply for a Social Security Number until after you have secured on-campus employment or off-campus employment with USCIS authorization.
Once you have obtained on campus employment please request an employment offer letter from your hiring department. In addition to this letter, the Office of International Student Services will assist you with the proper documentation you will need for the social security administration application. If you have secured off-campus work, you will be required to show the USCIS Employment Authorization Document (EAD Card).
Students need to obtain a Social Security Number prior to beginning work.
The Department of Homeland Security requires that you maintain full-time study during the academic year, September through May. Enrollment is not required over the summer months. Undergraduates must be enrolled for 12 credits and graduates for 9 credits to be considered in full-time immigration status at Adelphi.
Adelphi University is required to notify the Department of Homeland Security if you are not enrolled full time or when you cease to maintain full-time status. If extenuating circumstances prevent you from meeting the above requirements, you must notify your International Student Advisor before dropping below the minimum credit requirement. In some instances, you may qualify for an academic or medical course load application.
Authorization to take less than a full course of study can only be granted by your International Student Adviser.
Passports can be renewed in your country’s embassy or consulate. Most consulates are located in New York City. We suggest that you keep a copy of the number or first pages of your passport, in the event it is lost or stolen. This information will expedite the re-issuance of the passport.
It is your obligation to keep your passport valid at all times.
For passport renewal, your embassy or consulate may need a letter verifying that you are a full-time student. You should request such a letter from the Office of International Student Services and the Registrar.
If your visa has expired and you plan to travel outside the U.S., or if you have changed your visa status while in the U.S., you will need to obtain a new visa at an American embassy or consulate abroad.
All applicants should be prepared to provide:
If you are presently on OPT:

To apply for a New York State Driver’s Permit and License or non-driver ID card, you will need to provide the DMV with 6 valid points of identification.
Some forms of identification include, but are not limited to:
Please review the Proofs of Identity Form issued by the DMV for more forms of identification.
You must present one of the following:
A Social Security Card OR if you are ineligible for a Social Security Card, 6 points of proof of name plus a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration (SSA) issued within 30 days of your application to the DMV, which confirms your ineligibility, along with the INS/DHS documentation that the SSA used to determine that you are ineligible. All proofs of name must show the same name. In order to obtain this letter, you must go to the Social Security Administration Office with your passport, I-94 arrival document form and I-20.
The United States does not have national health care. Doctor’s fees, hospitalization, laboratory fees, and medication are your responsibility and can be expensive. Adelphi requires that all international students be covered by accident and health insurance, whether you live on or off campus. You will automatically be billed for the University Health Insurance Policy, unless you show proof of comparable coverage. Find more information on how to waive or upgrade the school health plan.
